OHIO URBAN RESOURCES SYSTEM - Improving The Lives of Ohio's Urban Core

History

In the early 1980’s, Community Action agencies in Akron, Ashtabula, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Lima, Lorain, Toledo, Youngstown and Zainesville realized that due to Ohio’s unique demographics (more large urban centers of any state in the country) networking to address issues collectively would be necessary.

Ohio Urban Resources System (O.U.R.S.) incorporated as an entity in 1985 for the purpose of representing the needs and interests of Ohio urban poor and providing assistance to Ohio community action agencies in the work to address urban poverty. Working with other networks with urban poverty as a priority is also included in the O.U.R.S. mission. Strengthening relationships between and among each other; serving as an urban caucus within the Ohio community action network; and establishing relationships with non-community action groups have been pursued.

Since its incorporation nearly 25 years ago, O.U.R.S. has worked to represent the needs and interests of Ohio urban poor and aid Ohio community action agencies in the work to address urban poverty.

Today, O.U.R.S., is a statewide network comprised of ten Community Action Agencies in Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Erie, Huron, Richland, Lorain, Youngstown, Toledo and Trumbull. We are still the leading network responsible for strengthening the social and economic security of families and their communities for breaking the poverty cycle in Ohio.

The network is supported by a Legislative Consultant who works to assist the relationships with key legislators and public policies to support the needs of Ohio’s urban communities.

The association works closely the Project Manager who will leads the process of organizing personnel staff into action teams to carry out the goals of the strategic plan: Communication, Strengthen Network, Financial Management and Infrastructure.

While there are many great entities focused on strengthening communities through economic stability and anti-poverty efforts, O.U.R.S. is embarking upon an audacious approach to addressing the social issues plaguing large urban communities in Ohio.
